Shades of the acclaimed late-70s Noct Nikkor 58 mm f/1.2 lens, Nikon has revealed the AF-S Nikkor 58 mm f/1.4G, a professional-grade prime lens designed to excel at night and in extreme low-light situations.
When the company says the lens is optimized for “elite” performance, you might get the idea it’s going to be expensive. You’re right. But we’ll get to that in a moment.
The lens is 58 mm in FX use, but 87 mm in DX format, making it a natural for portraits.
Nikon says the lens will deliver professional-grade photos and edge-to-edge sharpness, as well as “overwhelming rendering performance.”
Low-light performance is ensured with minimal sagittal coma, while light falloff is controlled to retain brightness and reduce vignetting, even while wide open, says Nikon.
The lens sports a rounded nine-blade diaphragm, features a Nano Crystal Coat to prevent ghost and flare, as well as a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) to help ensure quiet AF operation, even when shooting HD videos.
For users who want the utmost control of every frame, two focus modes are available: M/A (AF with manual override) and M (manual).
The AF-S Nikkor 58 mm f/1.4G lens is scheduled to be available this month at an MSRP of $1,799.95.
