pentax k500The new entry-level Pentax K-500 DSLR features a 16.28-megapixel APS-C CMOS image sensor, fast continuous shooting, high sensitivity shooting up to ISO 51200, 100 percent field of view, in-body shake reduction, and an advanced auto focus module.

Along with the just announced K-50 (see below) the K-500 is compatible with both rechargeable Li-Ion and AA batteries via an optional holder.

The K-500 features a CMOS image sensor coupled to the Prime M imaging engine, delivering what the company says are super-high-resolution, rich-gradation digital images.

The SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism works with almost all Pentax interchangeable lenses, even those developed for film-format cameras.

The camera’s high-speed continuous shooting function has a maximum speed of approximately 6 fps, slightly slower when using AA batteries.

The K-500 use the SAFOX IXi+ AF sensor module for high-precision autofocus operation, with 11 sensors (including nine cross-type sensors in the middle). It also features a spotbeam projector to assist AF operation in poorly lit locations. Its select-area expansion function keeps the sensor module tracking a moving subject, even when it moves out of a pre-assigned auto-tracking area, by assessing distance data collected by neighboring focus sensors. This means not only greatly improved accuracy and speed of detecting moving subjects during autofocus operation, advises Pentax, but also the enhanced auto-tracking performance of moving subjects when using a telephoto lens.

The glass prism finder offers nearly 100 percent field of view and approximately 0.92X magnification.

The K-500 records high-resolution, full HD movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels) in the H.264 recording format, with a choice of frame rate (30, 25 or 24 frames per second). It offers creative image-processing tools such as Custom Images, and movie-recording features such as an interval movie recording function.

Auto Picture mode automatically selects the most appropriate shooting mode for a given subject or scene from Portrait, Landscape and Macro. The camera also offers 19 Scene modes, including Night Scene Portrait, Pet and Backlight Silhouette.

The custom image function offers a choice of 11 custom images and 19 digital filters.

Other features:

• 3.0-inch LCD monitor

• 77-segment multi-pattern metering system

• RAW image capture

• Silkypix Developer Studio 3.0 LE for RAW data processing engine

The Pentax K-500 will be available in September at a suggested retail price of $629.99 for the kit, including the new smc Pentax-DA L 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 AL lens.

I haven’t followed Pentax for many years. This seems like a nice little camera. I wish Pentax the best of luck with this camera. Many years ago I started learning photography with the Pentax K1000. It was a great film camera, rugged, with all metal parts. It was totally manual operated. A great camera to learn with. Because of that camera I will always have a fondness for the Pentax Company.
