There are three new waterproof and shock-resistant cameras bearing the Pentax brand, the WG-3 and WG-3 GPS, and the WG-10.

Developed as the top-of-the-line models of the rugged, adventure-proof WG series, the WG-3 and WG-3 GPS offer the series’ best waterproof performance (down to 14 m underwater) and shock resistance (against a fall from a height of 2 m).

They also feature a newly designed, large-aperture, 4X (25-100 mm equivalent) optical zoom lens (with maximum aperture of f/2.0 at wide-angle end), a high-sensitivity, back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, and a new- generation imaging engine to deliver high-quality, low-noise images and top sensitivity of ISO 6400, along with 16.0 effective megapixels.

Add in -10°C cold resistance, dual shake reduction system (image-sensor-shift-type SR mechanism with Pixel Track SR mode to more effectively compensate for camera shake and subject shake, plus High-sensitivity anti-shake mode), Full HD movie recording (1920 x 1080 pixels) and a 3.0-inch LCD monitor. Handheld Night Snap mode automatically captures four images of the same scene and produces a single blur-free, composite image from them.

The WG-3 GPS model features advanced GPS functions to record position data and travel log data onto captured images — along with a pressure/altitude/depth gauge, a digital compass and a wireless recharging system.

By positioning six LED macro Lights around the circumference of the lens barrel for macro shooting, the WG-3 and WG-3 GPS provide brighter, more uniform illumination on the subject when using the 1 cm macro focus setting or when the Digital Microscope mode is selected. To minimize camera shake and subject shake, the instant illumination enhance function allows for the use of a higher shutter speed by automatically raising the illumination level of the macro lights at the moment of shutter release.

The WG-3 GPS is compatible with the wireless Qi (inductive power standard) recharging system, which automatically recharges the built-in battery simply by placing the camera on a Qi- compatible commercial wireless recharger.

Despite its compact, lightweight body, the WG-10 offers outstanding basic specifications to perform superbly and dependably under demanding outdoor conditions: waterproof to a depth of 10 m for up to two hours of continuous operation; shock resistant against a fall from a height of 1.5 m; and cold resistant against temperatures as low as –10°C.

It also features a number of creative functions, such as the Digital Microscope mode that magnifies the subject. Thanks to five LED macro lights positioned around the circumference of the lens barrel, the subject is illuminated more brightly and uniformly than in ambient light to facilitate macro shooting. To minimize camera shake and subject shake, its instant illumination enhance function allows for the use of a higher shutter speed by automatically raising the illumination level of the macro lights at the moment of shutter release. A macro stand is also included as a standard accessory to maintain a minimum focusing distance of 1 cm to the subject during extended observation and shooting and allows attachment of an optional polarizing filter. The camera also has a 1 cm macro focusing mode.

The camera offers 14.0 effective megapixels and a state-of-the-art imaging engine.

The WG-10’s HD movie recording function captures high-quality movie clips (1280 x 720 pixels, 16:9 proportions, 30 fps). It also offers a variety of movie editing functions, such as extracting a still image from movie data, and inserting titles at the beginning and end of a movie clip.

The camera has a 2.7-inch colour LCD monitor.

The WG-10 features a 5X optical zoom lens (approx. 28-140 mm equivalent).

It also has three anti-shake systems: Pixel Track SR, Digital SR mode and Movie SR mode.

The WG-10 also offers High-speed Face Detection function, with Self-Portrait Assist mode, 12 digital filters for creative expressions, Digital Wide mode to compose an extra-wide-angle picture (equivalent to approx. 21 mm wide angle equivalent) from two separate images.

The Pentax WG-3 and WG-3 GPS will be available in March at an anticipated retail price of $299.99 and $349.99 respectively.

The Pentax WG-10 will be available in March at an anticipated retail price of $199.99.
