It utilizes an advanced optical design that features an LD (Low Dispersion) and an XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) lens element made from specialized materials to prevent chromatic aberration. As a result, says the company, it boasts sharper contrast and image performance than all others in its class.
The lens sports an Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD), Tamron’s very own ultrasonic autofocus drive mechanism. This USD mechanism delivers fast focusing, making it a perfect telephoto zoom choice for photographing sports, racing, or other fast-moving subjects, says the company. The lens also features Tamron’s proprietary Vibration Compensation (VC) image stabilization to assist in hand-held photography.
In addition, the lens’ external size does not change, because of internal focusing.
When used on APS-C sensor cameras, it is the equivalent of 109-465 mm.
It will be available in Canon, Nikon, and Sony mounts, although the Sony mount does not include the VC image stabilization functionality, as the body of Sony DSLRs contains built-in image stabilization.
The lens weighs 765 g (27 oz.).
